Memory Tapes aka New Jersey native
Dayve Hawk has released all his new demos on a single Soundcloud mix.
I personally love Memory Tapes and I'm a huge fan of Indietronica and
Dream Pop respectively. This new stuff he's putting out has a
grungier and textural feel to it that seems to lean away from the
dreamier, softer stuff heard in previous albums Grace/Confusion,
Player Piano & Seek Magic. Hawk's unique voice has suited his
music perfectly and it's no surprise that this new stuff has
different effects added to it to give it more of an edge. I'm glad
Hawk is branching out with his sound. I really like what he's
done in the past, but after three albums it's nice to hear something
a bit different.
Of
the new tracks “Fallout” is a notable piece that hearkens back to
the early dance-worthy Indietronica of Seek Magic with an 80's “She's
a maniac” twist and hints of Hair Metal distortion. I like this
track because it does something a little different from what's
normally expected. The other standout track is “House On Fire”.
This song is a little more of a “tradiotional” Memory Tapes
piece. There's a surfy, Dream Pop guitar riff backed by a synth
baselline, machine created percussion and highlighted by Hawk's
vocals. Both tracks are great and I can't wait to hear more new stuff
from Memory Tapes.
Here's my favorite Memory Tapes song, the ephemeral “Swimming Field” off Seek Magic.
