Food For Thought: The Madness of João Gilberto

When João Gilberto was a young man his father had him committed to a psychiatric ward because of his "odd" style of guitar playing and his refusal to do "regular" work. During a psyche evaluation, João stared out a window and remarked to the attending psychologist, "Look at the wind depilating the trees." The psychiatrist replied, "But trees have no hair, João." To which he responed, "And there are people who have no poetry."

He was eventually released a week later.

João went on to become one of the founding artists of Bossa Nova in Brazil. A musical movement & style which later influenced the Beatles, Cibo Matto & Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys. To name just a few...

Sometimes, genius looks like madness and sometimes it takes a little madness to fuel the soul.
