TOP 3 Summer Movies of '09

Okay, here are my top 3 favorite summer movies...

1.) District 9

Never has apartheid seemed so cool and relevant than it has in this movie. Sure, The film itself has it's own flaws. Many of said flaws had to do with plot holes, quasi-cheesy dialogue and several logic leaps in the writing. But despite these draw backs, altogether the film had the ability to raise social-awareness and dazzle your senses with beautiful special effects and on-the-edge-of-your-seat directing that makes you feel like you were right there with the anti-hero protagonist. I came away from this movie with a sense of malaise I imagine former war victims feel....only I experienced it all in the comfort of a plush theater seat.

2.) The Hurt Locker

Again, This movie was intense. Sadly, not as intense as District 9, but with a difference of 19 million dollars in budget you can surmise why. After watching this film, I now better understand and appreciate what soldiers experience in the service while answering the call of duty. The characters in the movie each give you a window into different facets of the g.i psyche. With dynamic direction and flawless, lifelike writing, this film definitely was worth every cent I payed to watch it. Above all, this film approaches nihilism and how different people deal with it in true grit and honesty.

3.) Moon

I was blown away by the originality and heart-felt plot this film puts forth. Set on the Moon as the title implies, this movie isolates you and forces you to question purpose and self, using science-fiction brilliantly. As I understand it, this film was written to be an Acting-Vehicle for Sam Rockwell and let me say he is superb in this. I was taken away with the philosophical and psychological themes portrayed and often found myself pondering its deeper meanings. I recommend this film to those who like intellectual narrative, impressive special effects and exquisite acting.

So there, that's my picks.

Peace,
